“You’re so lazy,” or “You work too hard,” which phrase best describes you? Generally, we want to be known for our work ethic, but hard work does not preclude us from the vice of sloth. Commended for its hard work, Jesus told the church in Ephesus that something essential had faded—they had left their first love. Whether disengaged or active in ministry, sloth appears in a life that has drifted from a love for Christ. So what do we do? Jesus’ call is clear: remember, repent, and return to his love. As we continue the Vice & Virtue series, we will explore the subtle danger of spiritual sloth and the diligent work that can turn things around.
