What do you do, when you don’t know what to do? Some freeze; paralyzed by fear. Some fight; doing anything to resolve the situation. Others take flight; avoiding the situation altogether. Performed at a wedding in Cana, modern readers may see it is a neat party trick, but what made this event so significant John includes it as a critical sign revealing Jesus’ glory? Is Jesus as miraculous winemaker enough to say “he is God,” or does the sign speak directly to humanities needs in the face of insurmountable challenges? As we encounter Jesus through this first sign, we will see that when our joy runs out, God can enter in.
