We were officially planted as an independent church in 2007, but our roots began to form earlier than that…
It all began as the English Ministry of Calgary Korean Baptist Church (CKBC), a member of the Canadian Baptists of Western Canada, was looking to expand into a new area of ministry. Since its inception, the English Ministry had seen a number of changes, not only in people but also in structure. The congregation consisted mainly of second generation Koreans but there was growing number of people from other cultures participating in the ministry. After much prayer, the leadership team was convicted and challenged to meet the needs of this multicultural group of people. In October 2006 the leadership team from the English ministry made a proposal to CKBC to start a new church focused on ministering to this developing group. This proposal was approved and blessed by Calgary Korean Baptist Church and the Canadian Baptists of Western Canada and GoodTree Christian Fellowship was planted in 2007.
We believe the Scriptures, both the Old and the New Testament, to be the inspired Word of God. We believe in its entire trustworthiness, its complete revelation of God’s will for the salvation of men and women and its final authority on all matters of Christian faith and life.
We believe in one God, creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
We believe that Jesus Christ is true God and true Man, having been conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He died on the cross as an atoning sacrifice for our sins according to the Scriptures. He arose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven, where He now intercedes, at the right hand of the Father, as High Priest and Advocate.
We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ and to convict men and women, regenerate the sinner and indwell, sanctify, guide, instruct, and empower the believer for godly living service.
We believe that men and women were created in the image of God but fell into sin and therefore became subject to God’s wrath and condemnation, inwardly depraved, and apart from grace, incapable of returning to God without Jesus Christ.
We believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only ground for justification and salvation for all who believe, and only those who receive Jesus Christ are born of the Holy Spirit and become children of God.
We believe in the unity and common priesthood of all true believers, together who form the one universal Church, the Body of which Christ is Head.
We believe in the imminent return of Christ. We believe in the bodily resurrection of the dead; of the believer to everlasting blessedness and joy with the Lord, of the unbeliever to judgment and everlasting punishment.
We believe that baptism is Jesus’ command for those who believe. Full immersion is the pattern established in the Bible. Baptism by immersion allows a believer to publicly identify with Jesus.
Baptism is one of the first significant acts of obedience to Jesus in the life of a new believer. It is a wonderful opportunity to proclaim our faith in Christ and to express our commitment to live in obedience to God’s Word.
To help people establish a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and equip them to become disciples of Jesus Christ in the world for the glory of God.
“we are given privilege and opportunity to do good, it is our time to act”
Rev. Dr. Capt Kwang John Huh
"My wife Doris and I have been married since 1997 and we have four children together, Nathanael, Samuel, Ariel and Katriel. I have pastored since 1992 and in 2007 as part of a team from Calgary Korean Baptist church, we planted GoodTree Christian Fellowship. I joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 2012 and I am the chaplain to the King’s Own Calgary Regiment, a light armoured reconnaissance reserve unit. I graduated from Regent College with my Master of Divinity and in 2011 graduated with my Doctorate of Ministry from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in San Francisco. When I am not working, I enjoy playing volleyball, basketball, fishing and golf, but most of all spending time with my family."
"I have a beautiful wife named Mary who is my eternal partner in Christ. We were married in 2010 and we have a beautiful baby daughter, Rua who brings joy to our family.
I was born in Kuwait, grew up in South Korea, and moved to North America in 2005.
During 2008-2012, while I was completing my M.Div. program at Canadian Southern Baptist Seminary in Cochrane, God used me as a church planting pastor of Global Mission Christian Fellowship (GMCF). In September 2013, God guided GMCF to merge with GoodTree Christian Fellowship (GCF) in order to reach out to more multi-ethnic souls in Calgary. I'm a part of the pastoral team at GoodTree and my roles are to serve Sunday School Ministry, Small Group Ministry, Congregation Care, and Missions."
"I grew up in Edmonton, which is where Gilian and I got engaged before moving to Ottawa to complete our 3 years of medical residency. While there, we became husband and wife and now, Calgary is our home. We now have two daughters.
We have the privilege of caring for others as physicians: Joe at the Rockyview Hospital as an Infectious Diseases Doctor and Gilian in the community as a Palliative Care Doctor. Looking back, it’s amazing to see God’s handprints all throughout the various stages of our lives. He is truly awesome and we are thankful.
Since being in Calgary, we have been part of GoodTree Christian Fellowship. It is a humbling and exciting journey as we witness God’s work and moving in the church. Our desire is simply to serve in whatever capacity He calls us to, and we have the joy of building community through fellowship and small groups, serving in missions, and participating in leadership."
"I was part of the original GoodTree Christian Fellowship planting team and became one of the appointed Directors. Once an elected Deacon Board was established, I was part of the Deacon Board until 2014, and was Deacon Chair for 3 years. During this time I also served in the worship team in various capacities, and led mission teams to Rwanda, Thailand, and Cambodia.
From 1999-2000, I spent time with Youth With a Mission, attending the Discipleship Training School and School of Worship in Kona, Hawaii. I also staffed Mission Adventures in Los Angeles in 1999 and Niko from 2003-2005, an intensive 5-day leadership development camp through Kings Kids Calgary. This all helped cultivate my heart for worship, missions, and mentorship.
I married Helen in 2005 and have 2 young children - Amelia and Oliver. An engineer by trade, I also enjoy fly fishing, skiing, hockey, and cooking."
"I have served as a part of the leadership team at GoodTree Christian Fellowship since 2007. I have previously served in church leadership in Edmonton and various capacities here at GoodTree. I am currently serving as the Treasurer of the board.
I was born in Edmonton where I completed my electrical engineering degree at the University of Alberta. I moved to Red Deer after university, and then moved to Calgary in 2007 currently working at an electrical utility. You will often see me around with his wife, Tracy, and three children. Outside of family, work, and church, I enjoy playing sports, hanging out, and reading up on nerdy engineering stuff."
"I was born and raised in Calgary and grew up in a large Chinese church my whole life. My journey led me down to West Virginia to complete my doctor of pharmacy degree. It was definitely a culture shock, but I thank God for guiding me through that time. I met my wife Lindsay in May of 2013, and that summer she invited me to play at the GCF golf tournament, and somehow I ended up winning that year. Since that summer, I’ve been attending Goodtree and looking for different ways to serve in the ministry. We got married in May of 2015 at the church in front of many of our friends in the congregation and family. Goodtree to me, is a place where we can develop life long friendships, and relationships with fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Lindsay and I will strive to grow together, raise a God fearing and God loving family, and support our church in any way possible. I’m looking forward to serving on the deacon team and providing leadership to the church with the help of God."
"I have been attending GoodTree since 2012 and recently became a deacon in 2014. Before coming to GoodTree, I was raised in an ethnic Korean church with my parents. Growing up as a second generation Asian-Canadian, I yearned for a Christian community that shared common values and beliefs where I could express myself more freely and find new ways to serve God. Upon finding GoodTree, I felt welcomed and secure in my unique identity, as well as developing life-long relationships within a loving and caring community. I’ve been on mission trips to South Africa several times, and continue to serve the South Africa ministry by training and leading short term mission teams. I currently serve as church secretary."
"I moved to Calgary from Toronto in 2009, and began the hardest, but most enlightening, journey of my life. Through that journey, God allowed me to marry my best friend and husband Michael Kwan in 2013, after having dated for 6 years prior. While searching for churches in the Calgary area, we were connected to Goodtree Christian Fellowship in 2010 through a friend, and a joint ministry. Five years later, it has been an honor to serve this congregation through various teams and roles, and to be a member of the Deacon Board. We believe God has called our family, as a doctor and a nurse, to serve him in the medical mission field overseas. Together, Michael and I have done short term missions in rural China, Dominican Republic, and South Africa. We continue to pray and seek where he might lead us in the future to serve, live, and work for the Kingdom. As we go about our daily lives here in Calgary, pray that our hearts and that of our future family, would be Kingdom minded. On my free time, I enjoy hip-hop dancing, and have been dancing with a hip-hop dance company for close to 9 years. I see beauty in the way creative expression can be seen through the combination of physical movement and music."
"I grew up in Taber before moving to Calgary with my family when I was 7. Calgary has been my home ever since. I have attended GCF since 2012 and have been actively involved in the Open Door Café Ministry. In my journey as a Christian I am challenged to be open to opportunities to serve and grow in my faith. I’ve most recently participated on a short term mission trip to South Africa. I look forward to seeing how God continues to move through, and grow our community."
"I was born in Brunei and grew up in Vancouver. I moved to Calgary in 2000, and in 2008 I became very blessed to meet and eventually marry my wife, Jewel, and gain Tiana as a daughter . It was Pastor John that officiated our wedding and our family is fortunate to have him as a friend.
Jewel and I have been attending Goodtree on and off since about 2010 and more regularly since 2012. It was through a very difficult time in our lives that God placed many angels from our community to walk and support our journey which I am forever grateful for. When the hands of GCF laid on us it was the first time I felt the Holy Spirit. I am always amazed to what God can do in our lives.
We have been very fortunate in getting to know our brothers and sisters through various social and church events and we pray we can continue to grow together in Christ. In 2013 I was fortunate to go to Mexico with Tiana on a family mission trip and see the grace of God work in another part of God’s creation. I look forward to continuously learning what God desires in my life.
Jewel has taught Language Arts for over 13 years and I have worked as a Sales Manager in the food industry for over 20 years. We are blessed to be a part of various small groups to grow our faith, and share our lives and experiences with our community. I have been learning the importance of reaching out to people and hope to continue to grow in this area.
It truly is an honor and privilege for me to be able to serve our community."
Calgary has been my home for most of my life and I love living here. I started attending GoodTree in 2009 and have been actively involved in the Rundle Group Home, Baker House and Open Door Café ministries. I have picked up the guitar to lead worship and facilitated a discussion at Open Door Café on occasion. Also, early on I had the desire to do short term missions and had the privilege of going to Ecuador and twice to South Africa with teams from GoodTree. It is amazing to see how God works when we are open and willing to follow his calling.
I am an accountant by trade, completed a math and accounting degree at U of C and a master of professional accounting at U of S and have been designated since 2014. I currently study part-time in seminary at Ambrose University, which has been great for growing my heart and mind to serve God better.
I’m excited about serving on the leadership team and can’t wait to see how God will continue to work!
"I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:14).
I have come full circle as I was born in Edmonton but grew up in BC, went to university in Ontario then found myself back in Alberta upon getting married in 2005. My husband, Jason, and I were a part of the original church plant so we have had the privilege to witness how God planted a tiny seed, watered it, shielded it and continues to bless GCF to be a source of fruit for His kingdom. Being a part of GCF has taught me what it truly means to be in fellowship for Christ. Symbolically, GCF is my reminder that this life I have to live must be rooted in the Lord; He asks for obedience and responds with immeasurable and undeserved grace and blessing. My roles as a wife, mother, deacon and as the Executive Director of Collective Goods (a non-profit organization that helps the sustainability of underprivileged women) are all ways in which I am being obedient to the call He has placed in my life. These roles are also blessings in my life that draw me closer to a relationship with our Lord and saviour. I am thankful to be able to say, "Here I am. Send me!" (Isaiah 6:8)
